Chennai, October 14, 2024 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Chennai and several other districts of Tamil Nadu, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall this week due to intensified monsoon conditions. The IMD has forecast rain exceeding 20 cm in some areas, particularly on October 14-15, prompting the state government to take urgent precautionary measures.
Heavy Rainfall Expected: Latest Developments
The IMD has predicted intense rainfall across Tamil Nadu, especially in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts. This downpour is attributed to the strengthening of the northeast monsoon. In light of this, Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a holiday for schools and colleges in these regions, effective immediately, to safeguard the public from any travel-related difficulties.
The IMD has also warned of the possibility of urban flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas due to the heavy showers expected between October 14 and 16. Several districts, including the Nilgiris, Erode, and Coimbatore, may also experience intense rainfall.
Government and Safety Measures
Chief Minister MK Stalin chaired a high-level meeting to assess preparedness for the heavy rains. Following the meeting, the state government has advised IT professionals and others in affected districts to work from home for the next few days, from October 15-18, to minimize disruptions and reduce congestion on the roads.
The government has also deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams in vulnerable regions as a preventive measure. Local authorities are on high alert to monitor water levels in reservoirs and rivers, with disaster management teams ready for immediate action in case of emergencies.
Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel during the period of heavy rainfall. The Chennai Corporation has issued helpline numbers for assistance in case of flooding or other emergencies. Additionally, fishermen have been warned to avoid going out to sea due to rough conditions and gusty winds expected until October 17.
Impact on Daily Life
With the city on high alert, traffic disruptions are expected, and authorities are working to ensure minimal impact on essential services. The heavy rainfall has already resulted in the closure of schools and colleges across four districts, with businesses also taking precautionary steps.
Citizens are being urged to prepare for potential waterlogging and power outages in some areas. Relief measures, such as setting up temporary shelters and preparing food and medical supplies, are in place to assist those affected by the rains.
Weather Forecast
According to the IMD, the heavy rainfall is expected to subside by the end of the week. Until then, the weather department continues to monitor the situation closely and has placed Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal under a red alert for October 14-16, with isolated heavy rainfalls expected in several regions.
As the rains continue to intensify, the Tamil Nadu government remains focused on mitigating the impact of these weather conditions while ensuring public safety.
