BHUBANEWSAR : In a concerning development, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, leader of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) outfit, has issued threats targeting the upcoming Director General-Inspector General (DG-IG) conference in Bhubaneswar. The high-profile event, scheduled to begin on November 29, 2024, will see the attendance of prominent officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
In a video message, Pannun urged his supporters to infiltrate local temples and hotels in disguise to disrupt the event. He alleged that the conference would plan operations against pro-Khalistani Sikhs, Kashmiri fighters, and Naxalites. This follows a pattern of provocative statements by the UAPA-designated terrorist, known for his separatist agenda.
Odisha Police, led by DGP YB Khurania, has assured heightened security measures in Bhubaneswar. Several areas around the venue have been declared no-drone and no-flying zones to ensure the safety of dignitaries.
The DG-IG conference will be held from November 29 to December 1, focusing on national security challenges. Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to prevent disruptions.
Security Measures Enhanced
In response to Pannun’s threats, Odisha Police, in coordination with central agencies, has heightened security in the city. Key locations, including the Lok Seva Bhawan and nearby accommodations, have been fortified. The Commissionerate Police and state security personnel are on high alert, ensuring the safety of delegates, including senior officials expected to participate in discussions on pressing issues like terrorism, infiltration, and cybercrime.
Pannun’s History of Threats
Pannun, known for advocating a separate Sikh state, has been designated a terrorist by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs. His recent threats coincide with diplomatic tensions between India and Canada, exacerbated by his alleged involvement in anti-national activities. Authorities have intensified intelligence operations to preempt any disruptions during the conference.
