Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana(PMVY): Empowering Traditional Artisans with Skill Development and Financial Support

The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana (PMVY) is a significant initiative by the Government of India, launched on September 17, 2023. The scheme aims to promote traditional artisans and craftsmen by enhancing their skills, providing financial assistance, and connecting them to modern markets. It focuses on recognizing the invaluable contributions of artisans, particularly those from economically weaker sections, and ensuring their crafts and skills are preserved and promoted.

Key Objectives:

  1. Skill Enhancement: Traditional artisans and craftsmen will receive advanced training to improve their existing skills and adopt modern techniques.
  2. Financial Support: Easy loans will be provided with interest subsidies for upgrading tools and purchasing raw materials.
  3. Market Access: The scheme will connect artisans to e-commerce platforms, enabling them to sell their products globally.
  4. Social Security: Coverage for accident insurance and life insurance will be provided to registered beneficiaries.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Individuals engaged in traditional occupations like carpentry, blacksmithing, tailoring, pottery, and weaving.
  • Must be Indian citizens with Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
  • Proof of skill or engagement in the traditional craft will be required.

Major Benefits:

  1. Skill Training: Registered artisans will receive a stipend during the training period.
  2. Interest Subsidy on Loans: Artisans can avail loans of up to ₹1 lakh in the first phase and ₹2 lakh in the second phase.
  3. Tools Subsidy: Financial assistance for purchasing modern tools to enhance productivity.
  4. E-commerce Integration: Artisans will be linked to online platforms to expand their customer base beyond local markets.

Implementation:

The scheme is being rolled out in phases, and training programs are being conducted through certified institutes. Financial assistance is being disbursed through nationalized banks.

Target Audience:

The PM Vishwakarma Yojana is expected to benefit over 30 lakh artisans across India by 2026.

This scheme is essential for preserving traditional crafts while integrating modern technology and market access, ensuring a brighter future for India’s artisans.
